Roller Chains & Accessories
Engineered for strength, durability and precision, roller chains are the backbone of a number of mechanical systems, including industrial machinery and automotive applications. Tractor Supply’s stock of roller chains ensures reliable power transmission, while our range of accessories makes installation and maintenance simple and efficient. With hardware sized for farm, shop and outdoor power applications, we carry solutions rated For Life Out Here.
Components Built for Reliable Power Transfer
A roller chain is a series of interlocking links that wrap around sprockets, which are toothed wheels mounted on shafts. As the sprocket turns, the links grip each tooth and carry that rotational force to the next sprocket in the system. That simple design handles high loads over long distances, which is why these chain drives are standard in agricultural, industrial and mechanical equipment. Carbon steel is the most widely used material because it delivers strength without too much weight. For tougher applications, heavy-duty chains feature hardened steel pins and reinforced rollers, built to withstand higher speeds and greater load demands.
Every roller chain has an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) size number. Common sizes include #25, #40, #60, and #80, with higher numbers indicating a larger, stronger chain. The number is tied to the pitch, which is the distance between one link pin and the next. On the smaller end, a #25 chain has a 1/4-in. pitch and suits light-duty equipment. On the larger end, a #80 chain has a 1-in. pitch and is suitable for heavier machinery. Getting the right chain-to-sprocket match prevents premature wear on both components and keeps the drive running smoothly.
Links for Joining and Sizing Chains
Roller chain links let you join two chain ends together, shorten a chain that's too long or add length when you need it. Connecting links slide into position between two open ends and lock with a small clip or pin. Offset links, sometimes called half links, add or remove a single link length from the total chain, which solves the problem when a chain needs an odd number of links. These links are available in sizes that match the chain, from smaller options, such as #35 and #40, to larger versions, such as #60 and #80. Selecting the right size keeps the joint secure and the mechanical drive performing as expected.
Maintenance Tools for Roller Chain Systems
Roller chains stretch gradually with use, and, at some point, individual links need attention. Keeping the right roller chain tools and accessories nearby means less downtime when that point arrives. Chain breakers press the pins out of a roller chain using a threaded push pin, which separates links so worn or damaged sections can be removed. Smaller breakers work with chains from #25 through #60, and larger models handle #60 through #100. Chain tensioners serve a separate purpose, applying controlled pressure to the slack side of a drive, so links stay engaged with the sprockets instead of sagging or skipping.
