Kits

If you don’t have many first aid supplies for your animals, horse first aid kits come with several items that can come in handy after a wound or injury. Some kits contain ointment for scratches or other wounds, along with bandages or wraps to cover the area after it’s applied.

Solutions

Horse first aid solutions can be used for several purposes, including cleaning and disinfecting wounds, treating infections, such as pink eye, or providing itch or redness relief. Anti-bacterial solutions decrease bacteria in open wounds, abscesses, sores and more, while anti-fungal ones treat fungi such as yeast, ringworm and more. Most solutions come in a liquid form for easy application to the affected area, while others are pastes or gels.

Bandages

If your horse exercises frequently and needs their legs supported or has received an injury, they may benefit from horse bandages. Bandages can help to decrease swelling and promote wound healing by protecting the area from bacteria or debris. Made from durable cohesive materials such as rubber latex or elastic, horse bandages offer lightweight yet lasting use. Some styles are reusable for added convenience. Many are self-adhesive to provide a secure closure on the affected area.

Wraps

Horse first aid wraps are similar to bandages in that they both provide support for injured areas and can reduce swelling. However, wraps are often thicker, more structured or padded to provide enhanced comfort and support. Wraps with hook-and-loop closures provide a secure fit that won’t fall off during activity. Other wraps are not designed for use during activity but are made to treat wind puffs, arthritis and other foot and ankle injuries. They are secured with magnets and help increase blood flow and decrease inflammation for optimal healing. Other wraps feature antimicrobial properties to fend off bacteria.
